Gonna Lay Down my Sword and Shield

Violence has been with us ever since the first bacterium engulfed another to improve its chances of survival. Violence has been a key strategy that has ensured our dominance and thus our survival. Balancing our violence is our propensity for co-operation.

Today, we evolve through the use of our mind and the use of violence has become a barrier to our continued evolution. But, we cannot just turn off our violence, because it is such a deeply ingrained habit pattern. The underlying question asked by this book is, "What do we really need to do to get beyond using the violence we perpetrate on each other so as to live full and compassionate lives".

Victor discovered the science of chaos and complexity provided a holistic way of seeing the world that made sense for the modern world and provided the framework for investigating the roots of human violence. His book explores human evolution from the perspective of  psychology, mythology, history, and spirituality and gives some clues as to how we might move from a world of violence to a world of compassion

The book is divided into seven sections:

  1. The first section looks at the issue of violence, particularly from an evolutionary perspective.
  2. The second section examines at the principles and concepts of complexity.
  3. The third section looks at human psychology from a complexity perspective.
  4. The fourth section explores some other ideas and theories, such as Ken Wilber and the Integral vision, Spiral Dynamics and the Adaptive Cycle.
  5. The fifth section looks at various epochs of history from a complexity perspective. This puts history into perspective and suggests pathways for the future.
  6. The sixth section focuses on our present situation and some possible futures,
  7. The seventh section brings the whole book together to create a vision for the future working towards living from compassion.
